Hugh Hewitt points out the image difference between Cantwell and her GOP opponent, Mike McGavick:
McGavick turned around this company Safeco, which he was CEO of. He's also got political instincts. He was a former Capitol Hill staffer and everything. A lot of glowing reports on him. Maria Cantwell doesn't seem to have much personal aura, and so far as I can determine, a very narrow winner last time.Close is putting it mildly, Cantwell beat incumbent Slade Gorton by about 1,500 votes. Her re-election problem lies in the fact that she betrayed her support base. You wouldn't know it, but the majority of the counties in Washington is Republican or at least conservative. Put a charasmatic, middle of the road Republican up against Cantwell and she hasn't got a chance.
