SEO Titles vs. Catchy Titles

Apparently newspapers with a web presence, like The New York Times are re-writing their headlines when they appear on the web so that they are SEO respectible.  There is nothing wrong with this, and the practice very likely makes it easier to find a particular article, but it doesn't do much to catch the eye when massed in a feed reader. 
When I'm reading a newspaper, a catchy, funny headline might be what I need to pull me into a story. And I do love a good headline. But if I'm keyword searching for news, I know what I'm after. Your catchy headline isn't what pulls me in. Your headline using the terms I searched for is what will do it.~SearchEngineWatch
I wonder what the ratio of people searching for news on a particular topic is vs. those just browsing.  Current news is most probably found by browsing where a catchy title helps best.  Past news would need more keywords. 

So tell me, SEO experts - is using keywords within your post less efficient that using them in the title?  How about tagging?
