How do you define an "effective" blog? Rhonda Bell suggests several metrics, including monetization and dialogue. Every blog is different and has a different definition of effective. One blog may be strictly for money, another to promote awareness - there isn't a definition of "effective" that works for all blogs.
Kami Huyse believes that bloggers should develop content based on principles and values. Honesty, integrity, a willingness to try new things and an open mind are all things I value. Easton Ellsworth expresses it best: "A truly effective biz blogger's thoughts, words and deeds are in harmony with each other. He tells the truth, reports responsibly, admits mistakes, and keeps promises."
Many bloggers, including Duncan Riley, emphasize the importance of a daily routine of blogging - blogging at the same time(s) each day. This make sense, because blogging becomes a habit, just like exercise. Cotton Pickin' Days blogs in the morning and carries a notebook during the day to collect inspirations. I use a voice recorder to help remember my thoughts during the day - it is easier to use when driving. This becomes part of my routine as well, making sure my recorder is always with me and listening to it every morning as I blog.
So for me, the most important habits are:
- Define what you want out of your blog - how do you know if it is effective?
- Develop content based on principles and values.
- Set a routine.

I agree that routine is extremely important, but it is also important to build flexibility into that routine. For instance, my paid clients always come first.
