Blogging is the same way. Create a "snapshot" of your readers. What are they interested in? What kind of voice do they respond to? How do they like their information: sprinkled with catty humour or peppered with vitriol? Would they even understand words like vitriol?
A-Listers are two types - they understand their audience and give them what they want and expect, or they write and the audience has come to them. The second way is the hardest. It usually means you need a couple of established bloggers to support you.
BTW - the BBS blog isn't quite A-List, but they ought to be - they provide lots of great information.
