On first count we had five puppies. By the time I came home we had seven. I counted again an hour later and there were nine and then I recounted and there were ten! I made my husband come down and count with me. Sure enough, ten, good-sized puppies from a 28 lb mother.
Today she is very proud of herself, and very glad to not be pregnant anymore. She went outside and ran enthusiastically around the backyard for five minutes.
I hate to tell the cats they are now outnumbered...
