Ann Althouse has a strong discussion going on over on her post "Visualizing the school that favors boys as much as school really does favor girls."

My personal two cents is that there is too much non-educational garbage being included in schools. In some Seattle schools students can study cosmetology or auto repair, getting just the rudiments of reading, writing and 'rithmatic. I particularly have a beef against school athletics. Intrascholastic athletics better belong in a club setting, as they are in a great part of the world.

Separate athletics from school, emphasize the basics and incorporate a civics course that students are required to pass - that is my solution for public education.
