Where did the idea for Stuff on My Cat come from?
I've had the same cat since childhood, her name is Love. As Love started getting old she was a lot less frisky and spent most of her days lounging around. She was always in my room and as time went I think I looked for a way for us to bond like the good old days, but really there wasn't a whole lot we could do. As she would lay around I would just get random objects from around the room and put it on her. I mainly did it to annoy her, but as time went on it was kind of like a game to see how much stuff I could get away with. About a year and a half ago I was online and found out that other people did this as well, I figured an online community should be made that encourages this type of activity.
You seem to have "struck a nerve" with your site – did you have any idea it would become so popular?
I had absolutely no clue it would get this popular. I started the site as mainly a joke that might live on for a few weeks and die out once the initial rush calmed down. I'm really glad people enjoy it though, so long as there are visitors I'll keep it around.
What's your opinion on why people find it popular?
I think a lot of the popularity has to do with the "cute factor". Some of the images are irresistibly cute and people really respond to that. Just one look at Cute Overload and you'll see how much people enjoy that type of content. I think a lot of people are into it because of the quirkiness of it all as well, it's just so random sometimes you can't just help but laugh.
What did you do to spread the news of your site?
Surprisingly I've actually done very little. When the site started I posted it on one message board and it just spread like wild fire from there. I really couldn't have asked for anything more, it's amazing how quickly information can spread. Now if things didn't take off I'm sure I would have spent a lot more time spreading the word.
Does Stuff on My Cat funnel many visitors to your work site? Do you get work from Stuff on My Cat?
I've gotten quite a few jobs from SOMC, yes. Traffic since the site launched has been consistently up and I get emails regularly from people who are interested in my design work.
Any other projects you are working on that you'd like readers to know about?
Well, as you might have known we just redesigned the site. We now have wallpapers, AIM icons, web banners, weekly contests, a press page a revamped store with lots of new products including our new calendars. While it hasn't been advertised on the site yet we do have a Stuff On My Cat book coming out this fall. We're currently doing a lot of things to promote it when the time is right. Coming this fall there will be some insanely cool products coming out along with some new additions to the site.
Do you have a favorite Stuff on My Cat photo?
I have so many, but I would say one of my favorites is Hailey. I love that picture.
