What 3 things do these blogs have in common?
- They post early and post often
- They vary their topics from post to post
- They cover topics that a wide variety of people are interested in.
Post early and post often
Look at the times of the posts on each of these blogs - they are times to hit early in the day, east coast time, with additional posts spaced out over the whole course of the day. People at their desks early have something to read, and reasons to return throughout the day.
Vary topics from post to post
Gizmodo probably does the least of this, just because of the tech products that it covers, but within the realm of tech they cover everything - from TVs to hard drives. The others are also pretty wide-ranging so they never become dull and you don't usually read a post on the same topic twice. Huffington Post is the exception here - they often post different views on the same topic by different authors - but that in itself is interesting.
Cover Topics that a Wide Variety of People Are Interested In
Hype about long-tail aside, each of these blogs appeals to a large potential readership. Huffington Post ranges from political to literary to humor, Engadget and Gizmodo appeals to both tech nerds and regular Joes looking for a new TV. Boing Boing... well, who doesn't love Boing Boing?
Not all A-List blogs have these three things in common, but I find it interesting that the top 4 English language blogs do.
