Corporate Blogging Policy at the Blog Business Summit
Yesterday's session on Corporate Blogging policy featured speakers from real corporations - Yahoo, IBM and Microsoft, but I'd like to see more speakers from "non-tech" based companies.  Perhaps some companies that have to meet government regulations on communications.

Yahoo and IBM both have guidelines for their bloggers - no hard and fast rules.  Microsoft goes with the mantra "Don't be stupid".  The guidelines in effect cover:
  • blogging.jpgResponsibility - the company tries to separate itself from the blogger and warns that lawsuits are the blogger's responsibility.  The panelists admitted that their legal liability does exceed what they tell bloggers.
  • Respect for both the company and for co-workers, including letting your supervisor know of blogging.
  • Fact-checking
  • Give the greater context
  • Allow for private or confidential feedback - feedback that won't be blogged about.
The evolution of bloggers and blogging at Yahoo and IBM were similar - both had marketing departments/executives that were alarmed by bloggers within the fold.  Both tempered their initial knee-jerk response  by embracing the bloggers, publishing guidelines and establishing a policy of "keeping the blogger in the fold".
