Jeff Jarvis Predicts End of Sunday Papers
Apparently in England, many large papers have a separate Sunday staff, which is inefficient and costly, obviously.  A Guardian columnist recently predicted that Sunday papers in the UK will disappear.

Jeff acknowledges that the US has a different environment for Sunday papers - there usually is not dedicated Sunday staff - but he wonders "whether the tradition of the fat Sunday read is in doubt here as well".

sunday-paper.jpgI may live in a fairy tale, but getting up on Sunday and reading the Sunday paper has been a part of my life for as long as I remember.  An information poll of relatives and friends say the same - crashing on the bed or couch with the paper and a cup of coffee on Sunday morning is a ritual.

The Seattle Times/PI usually has interesting in-depth articles on Sunday, although my local paper (the Yakima Horrible-Repulsive) just has touchy-feely local stories, but I still read through them, drinking several cups of coffee and giving belly rubs to the dog occasionally.

Curling up with my laptop just doesn't evoke the same Sunday feeling for me.  Perhaps our frantic, rushing world will indeed kill the Sunday paper ritual, and the Sunday paper along with it.

The Sunday paper is too much of a tradition on this side of the pond.

That said, I don't know if the Sunday "newspaper" is as much news as it is a weekly magainze printed on newsprint.

That's a good point, Mike. Sunday papers are more of a weekly magazine in newspaper format.

One thing I didn't mention are the ads. When I lived in Seattle I rarely looked at them, but here in a smaller city they actually point the way to really good deals.
